In the last two years our volunteer-run and member-owned initiatives have taken our small library in the Ramditti J R Narang Deepalaya Learning Center from 40 members to 900 active members. We have issued over 30,000 books during this period. We have opened a second branch, which serves an additional 600 members.
As we have grown and are now The Community Library Project, we are collaborating with Deepalaya NGO and Agrasar NGO to continue to support more community libraries. As we endeavour to work beyond our own libraries, our goal is to make Delhi (and beyond!) aware about the importance of books, reading, and thinking for the full realization of citizenship and humanity.
We are library activists looking to grow a library movement for publicly owned libraries that serve all. We ask for your help in sustaining us as we deepen our commitment to our work and undertake new responsibilities.
There are a number of ways you could contribute:
By donating books: Our library is built on donated books -- new and used. We would love to receive your donated books and we appreciate your generosity.
If you are donating used books, they should be in nearly new condition. Because we are a library with many members, already worn books do not last very long with us and do not justify the time and energy spent in getting them on the shelves.
We accept Hindi, English, Bengali, and Urdu books. We accept fiction and non-fiction, books for children and for adults. Non-fiction should not be recent as this is one category of books where content can become outdated quickly. Books should, in general, be of high interest -- for example a book with golfing instruction is not relevant or of interest to our members.
We do not accept Lonely Planet Travel Guides, or Encyclopedia sets. Here's our Amazon wish list!
